Fowler, Henry T.

Henry Thatcher Fowler (1867-1948), professor of biblical literature, was born in Fishkill, New York, on March 4, 1867. He graduated from Yale in 1890 and received his Ph.D., also at Yale, in 1896. He taught at Norwich Academy in 1891-92, was general secretary of the Y.M.C.A. at Yale from 1892 to 1894, and assistant in biblical literature at Yale in 1895-96. He taught at Knox College from 1896 until 1901, when he came to Brown as professor of biblical literature and history. He was chairman of that department until 1932, after which he taught on a part time basis until his retirement in 1934. He traveled and studied in the Holy Land during the academic years 1912-13, 1921-22, and 1928-29. A recognized scholar in his field, he was the author of a number of books, among them The Prophets as Statesmen and Preachers, published in 1904 and translated into Portuguese in 1924, The Origin and Growth of the Hebrew Religion in 1916, translated into Chinese in 1925, and The History and Literature of the New Testament in 1925. He died on January 28, 1948.
